7 issues to overcome to sell abroad - 7 ostacoli da superare per vendere all'estero

Prossimo post/next post Giovedì/Thursday July 28th

VII.  cercano informazioni, ispirazioni, suggerimenti
Fatemi chiarire quest’ultimo punto. Consolidare la vostra posizione all’estero richiede tempo. Avete questo tempo? Avrete la pazienza di aspettare?
Avete considerato quanti soldi volete investire?
I.      Marketing, pubblicità e promozioni
II.    Spese di viaggio
III.  Logistica
IV.   Spese legali e di costituzioni
V.     Campionatura
VI.   Web marketing
VII. Partner locali

Once you took your core decisions you need to understand which hurdles you have to face if you want to pursue the export strategy. Once more: I do not intend to discourage you, just to state clearly that you need to have considered all is needed before starting a project. No need to rush and discover, in the middle of your trip through the desert, that you forgot to bring with you the water.
So let’s start to list the seven most relevant areas of issues that you need to think about:

1.     language and culture
2.     time
3.     money and cash flow
4.     deadlines
5.     laws
6.     customs
7.     logistic

Every one of these seven points needs to be analyzed deeper.  We will go into three of them in these post and discuss the remaining four in the following one.

1.     language and culture: yes, we are different, and sometime in such a way that we could not forget about. Which are the implications of the differences in culture in an export project? You need to consider the way people
I.      consider they can receive value from a supplier
II.    trust a supplier, brand , partner
III.  look for products or solutions they need to find
IV.   use to buy
V.     look for services
VI.   read a brochure, a text, a website
VII. look for information, inspiration, suggestions
And about language, do not trust on yourself as the best translator: even if we do know quite well another language, we cannot breath into the text the spirit we want because this is a gift given only when you write in your own tongue. I’m assuming these posts can be considered readable by English speaking readers, but nothing more. Not really a masterpiece of English literature….

2.     Time: how much time could you invest in this projects? And by this I mean meanly two different subject:
I.      How much time could you personally invest in managing or supervising the project, without harming your present business
AND
II.    How much time could you wait before measuring and evaluating the results of the project. We do say in Italy: “Rome was not build in a day”. Actually not even a in quarter, not in a year. Are you ready to wait for 18 to 36 months before delivering a verdict on the project?
Let me be clear about this last point. While exporting can be the best decision you take, you cannot consider this adventure as a short term solution to revamp your bottom line. It takes time to establish a position abroad. Do you have this time? Do you want to wait?
3.     Money and cash flow: these are the inevitable consequences of what we just said. This is an investment. To invest you need to put money in, usually with a certain amount of risk, and get your money back with interests after a (short/log) while. Have you considered the amount of money to invest? Are you ready to put it on the table? Will this jeopardize your business? Which are the costs to consider? Let’s just list them here and discuss them when we will define the 7 steps strategy

I.      Marketing, advertising and promotion
II.    Travel expenses
III.  Logistic
IV.   Legal
V.     Sampling
VI.   Web marketing
VII. Local partner

As mentioned we will consider the last 4 issues in our next post

7 decisioni per esportare - 7 decisions before going abroad

Scroll down for English version  - thanks!

Prossimo post/next post Mercoledì/Wednesday July 27th

Pronti?

Ready to go? Please wait a minute and sit down.
There is something you have to consider before taking off, do not rush. Actually the following two seven points lists should be considered before you can reach the starting point. You need to go through them in order to be sure that going abroad is the right decision. Am I denying what I’ve just said? Not at all: the fact that you have very good reason to export does not imply that you are ready for it or that it should be done. So please, take your time to check these two lists to be confirmed in your decision or to come to the conclusion that exporti is not your next move.
We know have to take decisions before we move, actually there are 7 decisions to take before you start. It’s better you consider them before we move forward

  1. Which is the budget I would like to invest in this expansion campaign?
  2. How long will last my patience before I start worrying about the results?
  3. Am I ready, and available, to trust partners that can lead me in this adventure, following their advices, once I’ve chosen the best and more trustworthy partner I can find?
  4. Have I considered the implications of developing a new market in terms of marketing, productions, logistic, travel expenses and so on and am I ready to quickly respond to the requirement of the developing plan?
  5. Whom I will entrust to handle the developing plan?
  6. Why did I chose this person? Which are the feature that can ensure me that I made the right choice? Will I trust her/him and evaluate her/his performance after the agreed deadline or am I not ready to abandon the helm?
  7. Am I ready to adjust the way we market and communicate to be more and more consistent to the profile required to conquer a foreigner market?

These can look like silly questions, but actually there are here to test your profound will and desire to really aggress a new geographical market.
Because, believe me, you need assistance, you need experience, you need knowledge and knowhow that usually you do not have at home, otherwise you will be already selling in different market.
And, believe me, you cannot claim that you know so well your present market that you can easily make assumptions about how things go elsewhere.
If you do believe this, if you think you can penetrate a foreigner market by yourself, that my suggestion is: think again, take your time, slow down and reconsider your decision. You can end up with a painful result that could damage your whole business.
Although global markets seems very similar, culture and habits are so different that you need to understand how business are like in other countries before considering to sell over there.
If you are decided that you could find out someone you can trust, you can really rely on, than let’s go further and start to analyze the 7 issues to overcome.

7 ragioni per vendere all'estero - 7 reasons to go abroad

Scroll down for English version  - thanks!

Prossimo post/next post Domenica/Sunday July 24th

English version

Let’s then consider the 7 reasons why you should consider to invest in a glob expansion, targeting some countries that will fit more with what you offer and increase your profits.
  1. Your market is shrinking, rapidly
  2. Your local competition is fierce
  3. You are under the attack of foreigner competitors introducing their solutions in your local market
  4. You’ll be an exotic outsider and this can be an intriguing value
  5. You can do it easily, thanks to innovation and high tech
  6. You can learn from different geographical markets and improve your global offers
  7. You can find inspiration that can help you make the difference everywhere

Just to go deeper on these seven rationales, you can consider:
  1. If you do not provide to the marketplace innovative solutions, able to change and reshape the way things are done –in which case you would have already considered a global expansion- you are sit on a consolidated market that is inevitably shrinking due to high competition, price wars, new comers, new solutions, new habits, new clients approaches and so on. What will happens in two years from now? Would you just wait to see what will be, or you want to invest in your future?
  2. Clients are asking more and more from their supplier: sometime they look for partners, sometime just for cows to cash (isn’t it funny? Cash-cow is one of the typical ways marketing people describe an easy market. And now it can be reversed to describe an easy approach to suppliers!). In any case their requests are skyrocketing and competitors are fighting to win more market share. Do you believe this is not happening or won’t happen in your local market?
  3. Global is local: the emerging economies, call them BRICS of Eastern Europe or what ever you want, are looking for foreigners markets to invade with their low costs, low price and sometime not low quality products. They are able to overcome you by their low price. They will always find clients that would accept the risk to buy low quality considering they are (apparently) saving a lot of money in purchasing. Isn’t what’s going on around you?
  4. You’ll be an exotic outsider and this can be an intriguing value: did you know for instance how North American people love made in Italy products? Or which is the fame that Italian design still has in South America? And what about the reputation of American brands in Europe, especially in Italy? Did you consider the exotic effect that your brand can have in a foreigner country? Were you aware that Vibram FiveFingers shoes, all rigorously made in Italy, are a big success in the North American market? We already mentioned the success of the Canadian goose down comforters whose first market is Italy. Of course you have to play well the game of exoticism, but you have a chance here you cannot decline without a profound analysis.
  5. You can do it easily, thanks to innovation and high tech: times are different now. Yes, they are tougher in some ways, much more competitive than before. The financial crisis is still biting fiercely and find a way to differentiate our offer is not an easy job. BUT, and yes! there is a big but, it’s also much easier to find the right spot to lend and easier way to reach the market and establish a position for your products. It’s easier to grab the right information, and set a strategy. My suggestion: do not do it alone by yourself: find the right partner that can help you. It’s much easier than before.
  6. You can learn from different geographical markets and improve your global offers: that’s another good point, you can learn from your studies and experiences abroad to improve your local offer and make the difference here where your headquarter is. And you can also cross-fertilize your proposal learning from different market.
  7. You can find inspiration that can help you make the difference everywhere. Learning  indeed is a process that requires at least two main prerequisites: insight and humility. And I’d dare to say that humility came first. It helps you to overcome prejudice and to keep your mind open to learn from everything is you can look at anything’s with the right insight. Discovering while Bostonians or Houstonians prefer your products to the competitors’ ones can provide you hints to re-position your offer, or even your brand, and make a clear statement about your difference.

Would you give away all these chances just because you do not want to even consider the possibility to sell abroad?
