Facile a dirsi, meno a farsi.

Networking: the promise land of these tough years. Let’s confess: everyone of us tried to network with friends or potential partners. Someone with a job close to ours, and we sincerely promised to share clients, contacts at least. To find lead that we could share.
We also tried to build up some common message, a seminar, a video where our synergic competences were offered to prospects.
Now if someone of you ever had a success in this, please tell us the secret that you were able to discover. We could even be ready to pay for it.
So, I do not have any hidden formula to share about this, just some questions and doubt that come to me putting together my persona experience, some readings and the consequent thoughts.
Why did we fail? Maybe because we were unable to target the right buyer persona? Or because the media we chose to advertise was unsuitable for the decision maker? Does a CEO search on YouTube ot Twitter the consultant that can turn his company around and solve all his problem? Were the length or the quality of the message to be unsuitable? Did we focus to much to what we could do and not what the client desired to achieve?
Was that the wrong moment? Were we unable to make a statement and earn the right? Or was it a question of trust?
How can likely synergic competences find out the best way to make the difference and communicate it in the right way?
I am inclined to believe that we should start from the client’s perspective: what is she really looking for in the web, and off-line? Why should she attend to a seminar deciding to leave on her desk her problem to invest (or spend?) time listening to us?
If we cannot find a right answer to this question, networking will remain a unrealizable dream.
Now my proposal is this one: would you like to comment on this not just writing your experience and opinions here below, but with a sort video talking of your success and frustration and your ideas on this subject? Or even just by a post.
Please suggest links to discussions, or webpage or anything could profit this discussion.
I will be pleased to publish your point of view on this subject.

Caro Paolo,

Great point you made and I can tell you there are many things to consider Paolo. My first suggestion is the focus of any campaign has to start with a goal. You may not like what I have to say but it's my truth and my reality. Everyone's goal is to make money, sure but that should not be the first goal.

Here is an excerpt of an article I wrote a while ago "You jump into the huge time suck of engaging on Twitter and Facebook because XYZ social marketer said, “you have to give your customers some face time”. You jump on Quora, Amplify, Tumblr and 15 other things for the same reasons.

Do you feel like a Mexican jumping bean, yet?
Has any of it beefed up your business?
If not, why do you think it hasn’t?"

Here is the rest of the article... http://level343.com/article_archive/2011/04/25/5-must-dos-effective-twitter-facebook-and-blogging-programs/

From the onset, people get frustrated... I get that. But I can assure you, there are many successful companies out there including ourselves that are gaining new clients, and new accounts with social media marketing. I will be in Italy in July, maybe we can have coffee and do some brainstorming. ;)

Thanks both for your comments and even more, much more I shoudl say, for the concrete optimism you brought into the game. Your link are powerful and useful for anyone. I warmly suggest all our readers to take a look at.
My concern, much more then a frustration, was actually more focused on off-line networking or partnership if you like.
You know, some friends of yours are consultant like you are but in parallel areas: lawyer, production, accountant, finance and so on. So everyone start saying: why don't we find a way to share clients?
Never seen it work.
I believe on-line strategies can be much more powerful.
What do you think?

and by the way SEOcopy, I'll be glad to meet you in Italy, hoping I'll be there: at present I'm in LA and will be in Toronto mid July.
