 English version

Giovanna Dezza, and Gloria Narrante are both  trainers and consultants with a wide experience. They recently published a book about sales, focusing on the relevance of the art of probing in winning clients. What makes their book much more interesting is the fact that they actually wrote a thriller, the art of investigation in sales, and they center a specific environment: store selling.
The intriguing text could approaches the questioning techniques that should be used by shop assistants to ease the sale. Could the same technique be fruitful for any kind of sales? Is what we asked them. But let’s start from the beginning.

Why do you believe that asking questions can be so relevant in sales?
"Actually we believe it’s much more than relevant, it is fundamental. It makes the difference!
Clients nowadays buy shopping experience. We do not look for a product (if we ever did!), we want to feel at ease when we walk into a shop: we want to live a true exciting experience. Therefore the relation with the shop assistant become a crucial factor.
Asking questions allow to collect information: to understand what does it mean for this specific client to live a wonderful experience so that we can then suggest the best fit for what (s)he’s looking for.
Furthermore asking is already a way to show care and interest and confirms how much I could be interested in the her/him. This behavior induces a sense of satisfaction in the client!"

Which could be questions that support and ease a sales?
"All the questions that could be useful to understand the deep desire of the client, the priorities for example. In our book we list several types of questions.
The main point is asking questions: what to ask is a secondary point. Through asking we reach two goals:
understand the point of view of the client
be able to lead her/him to a better understanding of her/his need and thus raising a desire to buy.
Very often the client is just missing something, even vaguely, and does not really know what (s)he wants. Asking you can lead her/him to understand what (s)he really desire".

If there is room for a book on asking that could mean that usually salesmen tend to affirm instead of probing: why this?
"This may be caused by several factors: often salesmen are more focused on what they sell instead of focusing on the client. We believe that it’s more profitable to be focused on the client, so that we could customize the sales relation and be closer to the client.
In our professional, and everyday, life we met a lot of good salesmen, who were in love with their products and therefore very keen on describing and offering them, even when that was not the solution. If they had tried to understand first the real need of the client, they could have found better way to promote the product.
Sometime shop assistants feel uncomfortable to ask, as if they were intruding in their clients life. This is way it’s so important to be sensitive in asking questions: I can’t ask if the hand bag he is looking for will be given to his wife or his mistress! Having said that we want to point out that there is a big difference in asking to understand the importance of the purchase, to know the details that will make the difference.
There is another relevant reason for learning how to ask smart questions: you can use this skill whatever you sell! In this world, where you can change several time your job, being tied to a single product could be really dangerous. What makes the salesman much more smart, and so much more worthwhile,  is his capability to establish a good relation with the clients".

Your book is focused on shop assistants: do you believe your approach could be used also in the B2B world?
"Of course you will have to adapt it to the different situation: the approach will still work.
In B2B you need to able to negotiate, while in the retail sales negotiation does not apply.
The founding value is exactly the same: to be effective you need to build and empathic relation. And to reach this goal you have to take care of your client.
If we could synthesize the book in just a line we would say: be curious about your client and you will sell more and better".
