First impression: let's change - Cambiare approccio

We all know that there is no second chance for the first impression. I doubt though that this is one of those well know stuff that no one cares about. I mean: are we really trying to do our best to make the difference, a real difference, at first sight?
Or we are strictly following what Albert Einstein pointed out as a definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

In this intriguing post Jeffery Gitomer provide hints on which I’d like to build: what can we do differently than just introduce ourselves with a business card and a brochure that will be very likely filed… in a dustbin, or the business equivalent (a huge file of unusefull docs)?
How can we get the attention of the people?
Here some hints:
  • Work on your business card
  • Work on the docs you leave

Can you alter your business card or add something, that can make a difference, raise the attention without disturbing the local culture?
Gitomer suggests to transform your business card in a sport stickers (figurina da visita) showing you in your favourite team shirt. That cannot work that way in Italy where perople can be very hot about soccer… but it’s a nice idea to work on.
What about the doc you are leaving: is it just the same brochure claiming you are the best or is there any value for your client? I once produces two small books with blurb with solution to main industry problems and quotations from the best management authors I could find. Clients appreciated that.
What about an articles written by yourself on a main subject for your industry? Or a collection of links to important posts and webpages (with QR-code to ease the process of reading them).
What else could be done to make and leave a good first impression to your clients?

Versione italiana

   vostri successi (diciamolo: gasatevi, spandete...)

   guadagnare, proprio come voi.

Che cosa ne pensate?

Networking is crucial, we all know. We are aware that we need to establish relationships to increase our sales, through the power of concentric waves.
And we know that to begin and strengthen a relation we must not just be true and honest but also find the best way to relate and show empathy. And that may be the problem.
Now recently science discovered, or better say realized again, that women and men are different by nature, and therefore act and behave differently, like speaking two different tongues.

Does this affect the way to network?

Following this post by Ivan Misner the answer is yes, we have to consider this differences while trying to start a new (business) relationship.
Quoting from the post, published in the Entrepreneur blog and that we warmly recommend to read, the suggestion provided to ease the newtworking are the following:

For women:
When asking for help, clearly communicate exactly what you want.
Men want to be impressed, so tout your accomplishments.
If treated inappropriately, speak up about it immediately.

For men:
Slow down and work on building a relationship.
Filter your comments, sifting out what is not appropriate in a business context.
Recognize that women are serious about their business and are at networking events to make gains, just as you are.

What do you think about?

It's a matter of trust - La fiducia è una cosa seria

Siate i primi a dare fiducia, a donare, a rischiare, sostenere, incoraggiare, far leva, aiutare.

To win referral you need to win trust. Unless you are perceived as a truly trustful person you won’t get any referral by those whom you ask to.
Now the problem is that we might have different perception of what trust is and how trust is conquered.
Jeffery Gitomer suggests 24 different ways to build trust. Or, better say,  a string of 24 steps you need to win trust. A difficult path? May be. What stroke me is that there is one subtil and yet profound fil rouge, a weft that links all these hints altogether: be the first.
Be the first to give trust, to give away, to risk, to support, to encourage, to leverage, to help. Be the first. Like in life, in family, like when you love. As Covey suggested with his emotional bank account. Be the first to give and you’ll get back.
There is a recurrent word in this list: superior. We do need to be excellent in our job, we strive to reach human and professional perfection, that we won’t never attaint and we should always pursue. There is no success without hard word: no pain no gain they use to say.
Do you have experience and clues to share with us?
