Learning from a leader - C'è sempre da imparare

Scroll down for English version please - Thank you

There are people that can inspire you, that can lead you to a new level of awareness and bravery. I'd like to talk to you of one of these guys that I met in Miami one year ago and had the chance to meet again several times around the US.
His name is Francesco Secchiaroli, and he is the CEO of  CapSec his dream came true more than his company.
I someway envy his youth -is at least 15 years younger than me- and especially his courage and tenacity. He is a living example that when you really want to achieve a results, and you are ready to strive toward it, and pay a price to win it, you can get it.
I’m not here to tell his story, just let me say that he was able to build a steady business in the US from Italy in the last six years, that means in the middle of the storm of the financial crisis,
I’d like rather to share what I’ve learnt from him, from what he told me and from his experience. Three major bullet points

1.     Get away from the product, your product
2.     Don’t’ rely on your dreams
3.     Be ready to listen, in any ways.

Let me go a little further to explain these:

1.     We fell in love with what we produce and sell. Especially professional or entrepreneurs. Especially if they are Italians will to sell abroad. It’s the “my little baby” syndrome: I’ve made it, it’s wonderful we have to sell everywhere. Don’t. It can hurt. So start thinking of the market where you want to sell and consider their needs and their likings.

2.     Don’t believe your enthusiasm is powerful enough. Build a solid plan, both financial than logic. Have you ever heard of the Goldratt’s trees? The current reality tree to identify hurdles and the main cause; the future reality tree to simulate the change; the transition tree to define the action plan; the S&T tree to figure out the best strategy and its tactics. If you want to ask, I’ll be happy to provide clues and links. Plan!

3.     Be humble, be sober, try to listen and learn from other people: they are not evil, they are willing to share experiences, wisdom, which –remember- is the way we call mistakes that have produced awareness. I personally prefer a low profile approach to great declarations that could end in dust. Furthermore this attitude will win you new friends and widen your network.

Are this clues only referable to export in new markets or, as I guess, are also a good hint for our everyday sales activity?

   vostri successi (diciamolo: gasatevi, spandete...)

   guadagnare, proprio come voi.

Che cosa ne pensate?

Networking is crucial, we all know. We are aware that we need to establish relationships to increase our sales, through the power of concentric waves.
And we know that to begin and strengthen a relation we must not just be true and honest but also find the best way to relate and show empathy. And that may be the problem.
Now recently science discovered, or better say realized again, that women and men are different by nature, and therefore act and behave differently, like speaking two different tongues.

Does this affect the way to network?

Following this post by Ivan Misner the answer is yes, we have to consider this differences while trying to start a new (business) relationship.
Quoting from the post, published in the Entrepreneur blog and that we warmly recommend to read, the suggestion provided to ease the newtworking are the following:

For women:
When asking for help, clearly communicate exactly what you want.
Men want to be impressed, so tout your accomplishments.
If treated inappropriately, speak up about it immediately.

For men:
Slow down and work on building a relationship.
Filter your comments, sifting out what is not appropriate in a business context.
Recognize that women are serious about their business and are at networking events to make gains, just as you are.

What do you think about?
