  • Ogni kit è confezionato a mano.

Rebecca Cousins is the owner of the web based business Frecklescrafts. She invested her professional experience in marketing and  personal talent in building this new job that requires to establish a strong reputation, not just on-line.

We ask Rebecca, whom we interviewed also as a WAHM for our parenting blog, to share with us her insight in her business and her strategy to nurture it.

1. You started a web based business:  how could you differentiate your offering from the competition ones?

"Freckles Crafts was started to fill a void in the craft kit market.  While craft kits themselves are not a new idea, I found that most of the companies who were offering craft kits for kids were not offering the “handmade quality” and uniqueness that I was looking for in a craft.  In addition, most craft kits on the market were comprised of larger quantities than necessary for my needs (resulting in waste of products and money) and also included only the base components of the kit.  Having to purchase additional materials to complete the craft was not only costly but took the convenience out of purchasing a craft kit.

Freckles Crafts stand apart from the competition for multiple reasons:

  • Everything you need to complete your craft is included in the kit; it is truly a kit that you can pull out at a moment’s notice and not have to worry about searching for extra items needed to complete the kit.
  • Each component of my craft kits are hand selected and inspected to ensure only the highest quality of materials.
  • Most of the components for the kits are hand cut by me.
  • Every kit is hand packaged.

I have yet to find another product on the market that can give that kind of personal touch to their products.  These factors lend to the uniqueness and quality of craft a child makes with a Freckles Crafts kit".

2. Which strategy did you follow to create your web based reputation?

"Freckles Crafts is a startup business and most of my budget this first year has been allocated to getting my business off the ground (i.e. website, logo, business registration, equipment, and materials).  There was very little money left for advertising so I needed to get very creative with how I marketed my company.  I hired a Public Relations professional from Pine Media to help facilitate some national media coverage, and to help with my website’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  In addition, I have utilized social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter to help promote my company and reach my target market.  While a lot of work goes into building relationships and maintaining status updates, the payoff has been worth the effort.  I have been able to reach customers on a global scale which would have cost thousands of dollars through traditional forms of marketing.   In addition, connections I have made on Twitter and Facebook have provided opportunities for interviews, TV spots, and product reviews all which have helped to promote and build my company".

3. How can you keep your clients, building a long-lasting relationship, while attracting new ones?

"Relationships with my customers boil down to one key word, trust.  When a customer purchases a product from my store they will receive a product that is not only of the highest quality and safety, but if for any reason they are not satisfied, they can return the products for a full refund - no questions asked.  When a customer feels good about their purchase they will often become repeat customers and also influence their friends to buy from Freckles Crafts.  Word of mouth can be the strongest way to attract new customers".

4. On-line and off-line; which are the different actions you believe should be done to increase your reputation?

"Having a strong on-line presence is the key to building a good company reputation.  A nicely designed website that is easy to navigate and order from will go a long way with customers.  I have also recently started a blog as a resource for customers to find craft related articles, free tutorials, and to provide a behind the scenes look into my company.
Off-line, I try to reach customers on a face-to-face level.  I love to attend craft fairs where I can meet customers and get their feedback on my products, packaging, etc.  The opportunity to meet parents, teachers, grandparents and kids who are buying my products is very humbling.  Hearing from a child which products they like or don’t like is always fascinating.  I will often go home from a craft fair inspired by an idea that came from something a kid said to me at a show.
I feel that anything a business owner can do to personalize their business will go a long way to building a good reputation.  A handwritten thank you note accompanying an order, adding photos of yourself and family members to your website, writing about the accomplishments and struggles of building your company on your blog will give a customer a chance to know you as a person and will result a stronger identification with your products".

5. What would you suggest to some new practitioner for building her/his own reputation and, web based business activity?

"Start slow and be patient.  Focus on building personal relationships with individuals you network with on social media websites.  Learn the ins and outs of search engine optimization (SEO) and make sure to submit your URL to as many search engines as possible to build your website rank -Google, Bing and Yahoo are the most popular.  Last but not least, put customer service as your top priority.  If a customer is not happy they will not return to your store and will likely tell others about their bad experience.     Like anything else, building a good reputation and solid customer base takes time but the payoff in the end will be worth it".
