Should  we advertise on the web? Every one of us asked this question at least once in her/his recent life. Since when the focus moved from old media to the net, we have been suggested by tons of mail to start an advertising campaign on Google, Facebook, Linkedin or what ever else it could be.
Furthermore, this recent study published on line on Forbes blog by Kern Lewis, suggests that small business, like professionalists, are planning to exploit online marketing solutions and are really focused on investing in these media. But, is it worthy? Peter Wylie in a recent post appeared on Social Media Examiner provides wise guidelines to consider the question and, in case, choose the best social media for advertising comparing Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin.
Facebook is the cheapest chance, but also the less focused one. Can be effective on B2C target especially when customers can be segmented with the parameters FB offers.
Linkedin, much more expensive, is the best social media for the B2B market, and for the possibility to use groups as a vehicle.
Twitter? Not suggested by Peter, whose hint is to invest time and efforts in improving one’s tweet.
I believe we have to consider something more at the very beginning: are we ready to support an ad campaign? Which is our aim? What do we want to achieve? Increase traffic on our website? Find leads? Collect email addresses? Be contacted? Just raise our reputation? No ad campaign is useful unless you spend time to write down what you really want to achieve and how.
In his wise post Kern Lewis reinforces this concept strongly inviting to definer a strategy before even considering to invest.
