Getting Naked: la forza del professionista - increase your consulting power

English version below

Come farlo?

Clients are getting more and more demanding. Looking different is a must.
Now, how can we be perceived as different from our competition? In this blog we are exploring all the possibilities that can help us in this hard job all along the selling process. Thanks to Patrick Lencioni we will analyze today the sales call and the consulting meeting.
Lencioni is an outstanding author: he shared his intuitions in several interesting books build around an innovative model. The preferred way of presenting management approaches for the US reader is a business novel. This is the way used, as an example, by Eli Goldratt, father of the TOC methodology, in his book The Goal just to mention one.
Lencioni wrote business novel and he added at the end the scheme of his model, making easy for the reader to understand the structure of the approach. Let me suggest you to read Dead by meeting, or Three signs of a miserable job. All his books worth a mention thou.
In his last text, Getting naked, he explores the best way to be a consultant and to win new clients.
His message is quite simple: don’t try to be supermen. Clients are fed up with superconsultants who are arrogant and aggressive, who never make mistakes and do not solve problems, but just impose standard formulas.
To be different, focused on the client’s world, any consultant should overcome three main fears:
•    Fear of losing the business
•    Fear of being embarrassed
•    Fear of feeling inferior

To overcome these three fears here Lencioni’s solutions
Fear of losing the business
•    Consult, don’t sell: offer solution even before quoting your job, thus stating your value and you will avoid hard negotiations on price
•    Give away the business: because you are interested in long term relationship show them that you are more focused on helping them then on maximizing your short-term revenue.
•    Tell the kind truth: confront a client with a difficult message, even if the client might not like hearing it.
•    Enter the danger: don’t shy away from uncomfortable situation, but step right into the middle of them

Fear of being embarrassed
•    Ask dumb questions: ask the questions that others in the room are afraid to ask.
•    Make dumb suggestions: even if you believe this could be wrong, do not fear to suggest it. It might be the unexplored solution or it may leverage new ideas
•    Celebrate your mistakes: don’t hide mistakes, take responsibility for them

Fear of feeling inferior
•    Take a bullet for your client: protect your client in tough situations
•    Make everything about the client: don’t try to shift attention to yourself, to your success. Let the client discover them by himself
•    Honor the client’s work: celebrate his success and praise his work
•    Do the dirty work: take on whatever a client needs you to do, even making photocopies!

These look interesting clues to me: what do you think? Do you believe they are worthy? In you experience have you ever done something like these?
Do you suggest us to go deeper into this model?

 English version
One of the most used, and abused, sentences is, for sure, the famous saying: “you have no second chance for the first impression”.
Now, the problem is: how can I generate a so good first impression to win the trust of the client? And I can I do this not just smiling and being polite, but in much more professional way?
To answer these questions we need to see the situation from the client’s perspective and try to understand which could be his expectation for these very first moments of our call, so that we can strengthen the good reputation or build a better one.
Actually, the client is puzzled by six questions. Which ones?
Let him tell us directly, in this video

How can we build an opening that will fulfill all his requirements? How can we make a great impact? Do you have any suggestions to share?

Intervista ad Alessandra Colucci - Interview with Alessandra Colucci

English version below

Summary of the italian interview

Alessandra Colucci, strategic planning and Branda care consultant, is partner of Queimada, the marketing, branding and communication agency, that she founded with Vincenzo Bernabei, and which publishes Brand Care magazine, the house organ whose aim is to connect ideas for innovation.
She also a professor for IED, where she teaches Brand Management, Advertising and Web Marketing and where she’s the coordinator of a master training.
She shares her ideas of her personal blog and on her preferit social media Twitter

Alessandra Colucci is a profund expert and user of the web and she uses to share her knowledge and expertice through her blog and tweets. We asked her to contribute to our search on referral selling answering to these questions.

How can a solid on line reputation help a salesman or a professional to sell first of all himself?

The sales is based on mutual trust, because selling is nothing but a relation. It is though more difficult to relate because in business you have less time and chances to explore. This is showing up with a solid reputation can ease the process.
Our online reputation is function of the way we communicate and our consistency: it depends on how much are we perceived as honest and expert. In the web, as in our real life, we end up building our on personal brand.
A brand is always a promise to our target: being able to fulfill the promise we will be able to confirm our reliability.
Therefore we will need to invest less time in demonstrating our trustworthiness and have time to build the relation mainly through listening and empathy.

How can we state our personal branding? Where we can start from?

Personally, my opinion is that any action plan should start from a profound analysis: and this is true for personal brand too.
Let’s first check who am I, how I want to be perceived, which are my strengths, my competencies, which is my personal competitive edge. And let’s understand which are my goals!
Then you can start to write down your strategy, studying the best tools to reach your own target and the best media to reach it.
Finally you have to define the way to use these tools before acting.

What would you suggest to a salesman who wants to reach more potential client through personal branding?

Empathy is the key word: he has to listen first and then share his own experience. He has to interact, giving first, in any place where he is: both virtual than real.

Web media and/or being where people is: what should a rich strategy consider?

Web solutions should be considered as opportunities to catch: the need to be cultivated to become true advantages.
This is why my suggestion is to mix up web and real life. Going just online is useless if you are not able to produce innovation and improvement in the real world!

Gitomer: l'importanza delle domande II - the importance of the questions II

English version below

  • Quale rischio vede in….?

Lead by asking sharp questions to an higher level of under standing and awareness: that’s a smart goal and the way to make a difference.
Easy to say: now tell me these golden questions that I have to ask. In our previous post on this subject we said that our goal is to help the customer seeing his situation from a different angle, a different point of view. We have to move him out from his confort zone, from his “that’s the way we do it here” mantra!
It is useless to suggest in this post the questions you have to ask in your daily job, and even more than just useless it would be very arrogant.
Gitomer, in this article suggests how to shape some smart questions that can make the difference. Here is a short list that we have extracted from the original article with some suggestions from us.
  • Smart lead-in questions
  • What makes you think...
  • How do you select...
  • What’s most important to you about...
  • Where do you see...
  • How have you employed...
  • What has been your experience with...
  • If you could change one thing about...
  • How would you improve...
  • What plans have you made to...
  • If you could describe your ideal situation what would you…?
  • Which is your goal for….?

Which questions could you create, for your specific business, with these suggestions? In your experience which questions have been particularly smart? Do you want to share them with us please?

Gitomer: l'importanza delle domande - the importance of the questions

Prossimo post/next post  lunedì 25 ottobre

Anticipazioni/Next week posts:
lunedì/Monday 25 - La giusta domanda - the golden question
martedì/Tuesday  26 - intervista a - interview with Alessandra Colucci

English version

The difference between a superstar salesman and a minor league one lies all in their way of asking questions. In the quality of the questions.
Asking sharp question ease the sales: this is way the art of asking should be the most practiced activity for sales people.
This is what Jefery Gitomer uses to say, for example in this video
We agree with him.
But why asking powerfull and sharp questions can help us? To answer… we have to ask another question: what you believe a client want from a salesman? Just value! And how can a salesman give value to a client in the same moment he is trying to sell him something? Helping him to see his situation from a different point of view.

How can this be done? Through absolute statements? Not at all! Every salesman knows very well that as soon as he starts claiming his truth and playing the role of unsolicited expert… he out of the door.
The only way is to lead the client through smart questions, ease his own way to reason, suggest a new path through intelligent queries.
This is what we mean when we talk of the power of the art of questioning: the salesman who is capable to bring the client, and himself, to a new and higher level of awareness will be always esteemed. Gitomer’s word!
And what is you opinion about?

Intervista a Enrico Ratto - Interview with Enrico Ratto

English version below

Summary of the italian interview

Journalist, sociologist and web marketer, Enrico Ratto is an expert in understanding the social phenomena connected to the net. He lives by the seaside close to Genova and through his blog he shares his knowledge and passion with his readers.

How is important to be present in the net for anyone who intends to sell, maybe himself too,?
It’s mandatory: with the net you can overcome the space limits to widespread your sales activities. And furthermore it is really important for the acquisition of information, knowhow, suggestions and any new ideas that can be used in one’s activity.

What we can do to promote our reputation on the web?
There is no standard solution: I suggest to do everything your nature will suggest you to do. What I mean is that any web activity imposes consistency: before starting any new one check if you are ready to sustain it or not.

Being in the WWW does not necessary mean to be seen and read: what one can do to be found in the Net?
Two ways: there are techniques, SEO first, and there is the capability to build up relationships. But in the end any action requires to stand on at list one of these pillars: product, know how,

It can be really difficult to decide how to start being active in the Net for those who have just surfed it: which are your suggestions?
I would start from a aware observation. Then choosing the channel that suits the most. Personally I do likes social networks and I do not spend time where I’m not motivated to be. In my experice you cannot be actively present in more than two or three web-places. Better pay attention: do not chose any marginal channels without any future. One’s persona blog, http://www.yourname.yoursurname.com is the 101 solution: if you have few time to invest, go for it.

Which is the mistake you have to avoid at all costs?
In my opinion is to build up a reputation too sharp and extreme. Do not expose your position, your causes, with to harsh words. I often find on journalists boards a long list of aggressive and abrasive comments: these are the persons I usually avoid.

La ricchezza della rete - A rich network

English version below

Perché no?

Networking is a must.
If we believe that selling requires trust, then we have to agree that building a solid relationship network is a must. The more we are know the easier is to find out people that we may in some way help. This interesting article, published in the website of “Il commerciale-The salesman”, Marco Rasi explains very clearly the relevance of widening a relational network even through the net.
Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter represent tools that we cannot forget and where we have to be in order to connect with people that can be reliable and helpful to us. We will go into further detail about this webtools in the next posts.
And talking about relationship, could it be useful to link with other salesmen?
Why not?
Sales rap doesn’t necessary mean competitor! How many other companies sell non-competitive products or services to our clients, may be also talking to our ideal contact? Talking about us, these can be the ones that can leverage their relationships to foster Adwice: loyers, marketing agencies, software agencies, meeting & events organizers, and so on.
If the client trust and valuate them, why don’t we ask then to introduce us and ease our way to the guy we desperately want to meet.
To reach this result we do not have to forget the main point we state some posts ago: give and you’ll be given. If we do not help them in some way, why on earth they should help us when we ask them for a referral? Let’s start building our solid reputation and then let’s look for their help.
Did you ever ask or give a referral to any other salesman? Do you believe this can be possible?
